SKIRTS STYLE
Poodle Skirt
Poodle skirt was an utter display of feminine
fashion in the 50's. Read the following article dedicated specially to
the poodle skirt and its importance in the history of fashion...
Fashion is one field that keeps on changing from time to time. Today's 'in' goes out of fashion tomorrow. That's the way it is! In this field where change seems to be the only constant, certain periods of time and certain fashion trends leave a legacy and that's what we call retro fashion! One of such remarkable trends is the 1950s clothing trend! I think, the fifties fashion was an era of feminism, that gave a distinct feel to women's fashion and made women all the more beautiful. Along with those loose sleeved shirts and tweed jackets, what we still remember wearing is the poodle skirt. Just the name of poodle skirt takes us back to the 1950s and those sweet poodle skirts. Read on women's clothing.
What is a Poodle Skirt?
Poodle skirts, actually need no introduction as they are quite well-known and still adored. When the poodle skirt was introduced, it actually came as a big relief from those slimline skirts. Poodle skirt is a round or circular skirt that falls around the knees. Poodle skirts used to be of bright colors and with a metallic colored appliqué of a wonderful poodle, often with sparkling eyes and a bright collar. This poodle had a bow on its head attached with a sparkling leash that found its way up to the waist of the poodle skirt. Usually, a poodle skirt was made using felt of various colors. To give them a dramatic look, they were usually worn over a crinoline. Crinoline underneath gave it an extra swish. To complete the attire, some other essential fashion accessories were, saddle shoes with bobby socks and a blouse with a cardigan. Wearing a matching scarf and styling hair with some interesting 1950s hairstyles or with a bubbly ponytail, added more glamor to a poodle skirt. Read on poodle skirt pattern as well.
Poodle Skirt History
All in all, 1950's fashion trends hold a great significance in the fashion world. It was this decade that gave an impetus to the then neglected things like movies and fashion. They were later a rage among not just teens but virtually everyone! It was a big relief after those gloomy 30s and 40s. The story of poodle skirts is interesting. It was invented in the year 1947 by Juli Lynne Charlot, who was an actress turned fashion designer by profession. "She cut a big circle of felt with a hole in the middle for her waist to fit and then appliquéd some interesting but whimsical Christmas trees on it. Charlot attended one of the Los Angeles holiday party wearing this skirt and grabbed everyone's attention.
As a result, for her next line of clothes, she was asked to make some skirts with designs of dogs! She selected poodles, instead of the Christmas tree and the rest is as they say - one of the landmarks in fashion history! Poodle skirts took the world by stride and became a cornerstone of the 50's fashion. These 'huge' skirts, as they were described back then, became a rage and were widely adopted by fashion enthusiasts around the world. An interesting thing is that they serve as easy to make and wear. Moreover they do not require any special material. As a result, girls also decorate them with some symbols of the 50's era and rock 'n roll, like a 45 rpm record or a deck of cards!! You might like to read how to make a poodle skirt.
No wonder poodle skirts are one of the most ubiquitous remnants of the 50s fashion today. They are one of the popular choices to wear on a Halloween party! Sadly, the felt gets pale with passing time and so does the glue of the appliqué. As a result, one can never treasure these skirts as vintage fashion! But, they are making a comeback; today they can be found in clothing stores! Poodle skirts were a rage in the 50s and are still popular among young school girls. Are you wondering why you don't have a poodle skirt in your closet? Well, stop wondering and get going to buy one and flaunt it in style! What say?

Like skirts? I know majority women will be saying yes. They are just as popular as jeans; very comfortable, beautiful and extremely feminine! All the regular skirt wearers might be knowing about the broomstick skirt. But people who have not heard about it and are wondering what is a broomstick skirt, read on...
Broomstick skirt is a popular skirt type that has a rich history dating back to the period of Renaissance. Wrinkled or crinkled appearance is its peculiarity. It is a very free-flowing, long skirt, very much "Indian". It is popular by various names like the gypsy skirt, hippie skirt, peasant skirt, tiered skirt and Indian skirt as I mentioned above. The wrinkled look of the skirt comes from the long pleats that appear like the broomsticks. Right from cotton to velvet to silk, nylon or rayon, you can have broomstick skirt of any material of your choice.
Broomstick Skirt Pattern
Broomstick skirts can add to your style statement if you are able to carry them off well. If you want to know more about the broomstick skirt pattern, I am enlisting different patterns for the same.
Plain Broomstick Skirt: Plain colors like the whites or may be blacks along with the wrinkled look or pleats can enhance your beauty. Go for it if you like something that is very simple yet elegant.
Tiered Broomstick Skirt: One to many tiers of same colors or contrasting colors will look amazing. This is the most popular broomstick skirt pattern. Many broomstick skirts are available in the "tiered" look. The color is entirely your choice.
Floral Satin Broomstick Skirt: These include skirts made from satin with floral prints on them. You can best use them during summers which will give a pleasant look.
Ethnic Print Broomstick Skirt: Ethnic prints blended with beautiful colors and textures give the broomstick skirts a very traditional "Indian" look. The skirt could be same as hippie style or gypsy style.
Pattern Happy Broomstick Skirt: This one is characterized by alternate patterns of flowers and stripes.
Sublimation Broomstick Skirt: This one has alternation of high and low hem.
The other patterns include:
- Tie-dyed Broomstick Skirt
- Tiered Boho Peasant Broomstick Skirt
- Silver Stream Broomstick Skirt
- 2 Mirrored Batik Broomstick Skirt
- Kaktus Women's Godet Broomstick Skirt
- Rainbow Broomstick Skirt
- Cattlelac Ranch Broomstick Skirt
- Denim Broomstick Skirt

Tip#1: Go for hand wash or light machine wash. Use the appropriate detergent and see to it that the skirt does not become stiff.
Tip#2: After the wash, while the skirt is still wet, fold the skirt into half, and hang it to a skirt hanger or a clip and then twist the skirt from the other end as much as you can. Do not be very harsh with it. You can also tell a friend of yours to hold the waist band end, so as to twist the skirt from the other end.
Tip#3: Now if your skirt is a tiered one, knot it after every tier with the help of a twine. But if it is non-tiered, then add the knots only at the top and bottom.
Tip#4: Hang the skirt in a not so windy place so that the wrinkled look of the skirt is not messed up.
If you are wondering what to wear with a broomstick skirt, then I can suggest you some ideas. Go in for some light or dark-colored sleeveless or full sleeves short kurtis which will give you a very Indian look. The color combination is your personal choice. Try using contrasting colors which will enhance your look. You can wear tops along with jackets if you want to carry a western look with your broomstick skirt. A pair of ear studs and sandals will be just perfect! You can go in for some bangles if you want to.
How to Make a Broomstick Skirt
If you want to try out simple broomstick skirt at home, here's how you can do it...
Step#1: Measure your waist. Measure the length of the skirt you want.
Step#2: Buy a fabric that is double the value of the waist. Give some room to sew the elastic waistband as well.
Step#3: Sew the long sides of the fabric after hemming them. This will form the base of your skirt.
Step#4: Sew the waistband properly with the help of a wire by turning it inside out.
Step#5: Wash it and knot it as told before to give the wrinkled look to your skirt. Dry it and you have a broomstick skirt ready to use! You can use various patterns of fabrics as well.
To sum up, I would suggest all women and girls to go and try out the broomstick skirt. It will surely enhance your beauty!

They can be embellished with sequins, lace and beads and look ultra-fab when teamed with sandals.
No fashion week would ever be complete without fashionable long skirts. This garment has been an integral part of ladies fashion and continues to be popular till date.
These long skirts are definitely here to stay:
Long Denim skirt:
Denims, being versatile in nature, when crafted into a sophisticated long skirt can truly boost the way a woman feels, whether at work or with friends. It can be paired with a simple tee on a lazy day or combined with a strappy, layered top for a night out at the disc. A must in every woman's wardrobe, the length can be played up in various ways. A long denim skirt can be fitted to the ankles mixed with a stretch blend for a hot and sultry look. Or it can be fitting at the hips, flowing down, with a slit at the side to reveal a flash of leg! Throw in some great stilettos and you are ready to melt the hearts of many. One can also find it embellished with embroidery or sequins though the classic, blue, long denim skirt has always been the one most favored.
Gypsy Skirt:
If you think it is time to make a splash in many colors and flowing fabrics...the gypsy skirt is designed for you. Reminiscent of the '60s and '70s look, the fashion industry has implemented various ways to transform these gypsy skirts into what we see on the fashion runways today. This boho-chic look can be crinkled and flouncy in three tiers cascading all the way to the feet. Fabrics could range from transparent to layered cotton and can be teamed with short tank tops; peasant tops or embroidered ones for that ethnic touch. Long dangling earrings combined with colorful headgear like bandannas create a cool and casual look for those willing to go a little overboard!
Sarong:
Also known as a wrap-around and derived from the word 'surong', this sensuous garment is generally worn by women (sometimes even by men) mainly on pristine, white beaches! Easy to wear, this skirt needs only to be wrapped around and comprises a single piece of fabric. Generally found in bright, floral batik prints you can find a staggering range in terms of colors, fabrics and prints. The most popular, however, is the traditional tie-n-dye one. Worn especially, throughout Thailand, Philippines and Indonesia, the sarong has found its way from the beaches to the regular evening attire and has also remained to be an ultimate and casual fashion style statement. A simple white top will aid in bringing out the beauty of this long skirt. Tattoos or body piercing can also heighten the effect.
The long skirt is a timeless creation and it would probably never go out of fashion, just like the classic blue denim jeans. A touch of fur, a tiny slit, some sequins, huge motifs, zany prints - Take your pick and bring out the woman in you!

How to Make a Skirt
Skirts make you feel feathery and on the rise.
Do you want to design one on your own, but are unsure where to start?
Let's sew up some information on how to make a skirt.
Before we get to the procedure, there are important things to remember. Whenever you design a skirt for yourself or for any body else, make sure you consider the body type, height, etc. Always choose the fabric and design that will suit that person, and will enhance the look and also make a style statement. Consider the latest fashions and trends if you are looking for a chic skirt that you would like to flaunt.
Easy Way to Make a Skirt
We will first learn to make a skirt without a pattern that is specific. These are basics on how to sew a skirt that will help you design various patterns, once you master this.
- To begin with, you have to choose a skirt type. That is choose if you want to wear the skirt on the hips or the waist. Once you decide, measure your hips or waist size and multiply it by 3. For example let us assume for a waist skirt, if your waist measures 27", your final measurement will be 81".
- Decide which fabric you want to use for the skirt. If you are new to designing and sewing, an easy to sew and design fabric is light weight cotton. Or you can choose from other varieties of fabric.
- When purchasing the fabric, how will you decide how much fabric to buy? Simple, all you do is divide your final measurement (81" in our example here) by the length of the yard, that is (for example) 36". The answer here comes to 2 yards + 9" . You can purchase fabric measuring little more than this. There are different widths for fabrics as well, like 36", 54", and 60". Check the print on the end of the bolt. The idea is to choose the width of fabric according to length of the skirt. If you are making a short skirt, use a short width, if you are making a long skirt use a long width fabric.
- Once the fabric is chosen, you will need to check on the design as to what other embellishments you want on the skirt. From beads, laces, buttons, badges to rickrack, ribbons, etc. You can opt for a plain skirt with no embellishments also.
- You will also need elastic for the skirt. Buy a pack of ½" of elastic.
- You will need to wash the fabric before sewing it. Now fold the fabric from short end to short end (that is, unfinished end to unfinished end), putting the right sides together. Now sew them at a seam near 5/8". Press open the seam. This how to make a skirt without a pattern will go down and at back of the skirt.
- We will need to make the waist band casing now. The idea is to make a tube for the elastic to run through. To sew this, turn 1" from the top edge of your skirt, and press. Now turn ¼" of this edge from the bottom, on the inside, and press. Now sew very close to this folded edge. Leave an opening of 1" to insert the elastic through.
- You will need to hem the bottom edge now. Turn it up by 1" from the bottom and press. Stitch close to the folded edge by turning the top edge of the hem to the crease.
- Cut the elastic to the measurement of your waist, you can add 1" to the measurement. Now run the elastic through the casing for waistband, use a safety pin for the same. Over lap the ends and stitch them. To avoid a bump on the stitch, use zigzag stitches on the ends of the elastic.
- Now to give the finishing touch, add a few embellishments if you want, or simply leave the fabric and design to create admiration.
How to Make a Poodle Skirt
To make a poodle skirt, measure your waist, this measurement will be the same for the skirt waist measurement. Choose the length (a little above the knee or little below the knee is preferable). Add 1½" to the total length for seam and hem line. Use fabric in rectangles, the longer side of these rectangles should be twice the length of your skirt length (from the waist to the knee). Mark the center for both these rectangles for the longer side when placed horizontal, on the top and bottom. Use a string (of your skirt length)and attach one end with a chalk. Now hold the loose end on this center mark at the top, and draw a semi circle at the bottom of the skirt. Now use a similar string (half of your waist length), hold it at the same center at the top and make an arc. Repeat the same procedure for the other rectangle. Now cut along the arcs that you drew, you will have two halves of the skirt. Sew the skirt, the front side of the two halves facing each other. Now hem the bottom. You can print a poodle image with iron paper on the skirt.
How to Make a Skirt Out of Jeans
Cut your jeans to the required skirt length, remember to add few inches for the hem at the bottom, and turn it inside out. Now cut the seam of the legs, up to the zip in the front and the yoke at the back. Pin the front panels (from the crotch area), leave ¾" for the seam. You can also fold in inside and cut the excess or simply sew it flat. Sew the skirt along the pinned seam, repeat the same at the back. You can use another jeans or fabric for the extra fabric if you need for the skirt. Hem the bottom of the skirt, or if you like a frayed look do not close the hem.
How to Make a Tutu Skirt
To make a tutu skirt, choose the length of the tulle fabric. You may need anything between 2 - 8 yards. Measure the waist and add 7 - 8" extra to this measurement. You can use elastic or ribbon for the waist. Cut the tulle in to stripes. Choose the length depending on how long you want your skirt and multiply by 2. The length of the stripes should be twice the length on your skirt. The width of the stripes can be of your choice. Around 2 - 6 " is preferred. Now over lap 3 - 4 stripes of the tulle on the elastic or ribbon and sew. Repeat until you cover the entire length of the ribbon or elastic. Now fold the tulle in half and again sew it over the ribbon or elastic.
How to make a skirt is no rocket science. You can use your imagination to create stunning designs for skirts. Let's sew up girls... the mirrors are waiting!

How to take Skirt Measurements.
- Body measurements can be taken over basic clothing.
- In the case of horizontal (white dotted lines) measurements, the
measuring tape should be securely covering the required body part.
(Secure, not tight!)
i.e: you use the measuring tape to go once around your entire body. Not only measuring your front or only measuring your back! - In the case of vertical (black dot to dot) measurements, just hold the tape against your body and measure the distance between the two points.
- Do not add any increased measurements for fit.
- All measurements in either cm or inches.
- If you’d like your skirt to begin at the waist, or at exactly where your hip is, please omit the “where the skirt begins” measurement. In such cases, do indicate if you’d like it to start at your waist/hips.
- As reference:
The vertical measurements needed usually include the waist/where the skirt begins to hips, hips to bottom, waist/where the skirt begins to where the skirt ends measurements.

How To Choose A Spray Skirt For A Kayak
In purchasing equipment
for the outdoors, I always use the same thought process. How often am I
going to upgrade my equipment based on the new radical improvements that
the manufacturer will come out with? How long before my existing
equipment will become obsolete and I will have to replace it? How long
will it be before I have a disadvantage with my existing equipment? When
the time came to choose a spray skirt, I decided that I would choose
the best spray skirt that I could afford based on the use of the spray
skirt.
What is a spray skirt?
A spray skirt is worn by the kayaker. The spray skirt connects to the cockpit of the kayak to create a watertight seal. This prevents the cockpit from filling up with water and at the same time keeps the paddler dry.
Who should wear a spray skirt?
Any kayaker that doesn't paddle in calm conditions should always wear a spray skirt.
Easy to remove
The spray skirt MUST be able to be easily removed during an emergency or a capsize. Either bring in your own kayak to the retail store or if the retailer has the same boat, try it out. Never purchase a spray skirt without trying it on your boat. Sit in your boat and try to remove it by grabbing on to the grab loop on the top of the spray skirt. If it is extremely hard to get off, it will even be harder during an emergency situation. You must be comfortable about wearing the spray skirt that you choose.
Must keep out water
If you are purchasing a spray skirt to keep out water (and some don't keep out water 100%), it must keep out the water. If you are purchasing a spray skirt for the warmer summer months, the type you choose might let a little water into the cockpit based on the design of the spray skirt.
Correct size
Some spray skirts are designed specifically for a type of kayak and some spray skirts are generic. Make sure the spray skirt fits BOTH the cockpit and your torso. A good fit for the cockpit and a poor fit on your torso is not the spray skirt for your needs. When trying on a spray skirt, keep in mind the clothes, dry suit, etc. that might be worn underneath the spray skirt.
Rand
The rand is the edge of the spray skirt which goes around the edge of the cockpit and holds the sprayskirt taut in place. The rand can either be a bungee elastic cord with a knot at the back of the spray skirt to adjust the tightness or a one piece rubber or neoprene piece to fit snuggly on the cockpit. The disadvantage of the knot at the back of the cockpit is that type of spray skirt will leak a bit (around the back and around the edges) as it is NOT a watertight seal. I use that type of spray skirt during the summer months.
Extra features
Some spray skirts have a pocket for storage, adjustable waist bands, suspenders, etc. Keep in mind that every spray skirt that has adjustments will have a better chance of leaking than the one piece spray skirts.
Materials
Spray skirts are made from neoprene, nylon or a combination of both materials. Whitewater kayaks use neoprene while touring kayaks use neoprene, nylon and a combination of both materials. I have several types based on the temperature and the time of year.
1. Neoprene: These spray skirts are snug, tight, thick to keep in the warmth, very tight fitting on the cockpit, can withstand rolling, bracing and high wind and waves. They sometimes get very warm during hot days and the neoprene spray skirts with an adjustable rand will tend to leak a bit. They will keep the paddler very warm during colder conditions and it is the only choice during the winter months.
2. Nylon: Nylon spray skirts are easy to attach, easy to remove, offer adequate seal to keep water out, comfortable, sometimes breathable, sometimes waterproof and are used during warmer conditions. The nylon spray skirts will either have neoprene for the torso or nylon. The nylon spray skirt should not be used during rough conditions.
3. Nylon/Neoprene: This type of sprayskirt has a nylon torso with a neoprene base. The neoprene holds tightly to the cockpit while the nylon brings comfort to the paddler. Please keep in mind that this spray skirt will not be totally waterproof and will let some water in when capsized.
Half spray skirts
There are also half spray skirts that fit over the top half of the cockpit to help keep water out, let air circulate and at the same time protect from water getting into the kayak. These are used during very warm weather conditions.
Spray skirt tips
Always wear the PFD over the spray skirt as the PFD will tighten the spray skirt to give a better seal. When you put your spray skirt on to the kayak, start from the back and work forward... always making sure that the rand is tight on the cockpit. Check again to make sure that there are no openings. MAKE SURE THE FRONT GRAB LOOP IS NOT UNDER THE SPRAY SKIRT. If you are unable to pull the grab look during an emergency situation, you will be in trouble. Attach a little plastic practice golf ball (the ones with all the holes) on to the grab loop as it will help you hold and find the grab loop during an emergency situation.
Don't forget to learn how to maintain your spray skirt correctly because incorrect methods might damage your spray skirt and choose your spray skirt wisely.

How to Choose the Right Skirt for Your Figure
Not in the mood for a dress
today? Don't forget the wonderful world of skirts! Perfect for dressing
up or down an outfit - but which style for your beautiful figure? There
are so many different styles of skirts that sometimes it can be
difficult to know which one to choose. This is particularly relevant if
you have to buy the plain old black skirt for work, and are faced with a
wide range of polyester nightmares, grabbing the nearest one just to
get it over with!
Don't despair! All it takes is a good look in the mirror and a little
logic, and you'll be adding more skirts to your wardrobe before you
know it.
Steps
-
Identify the different types of skirts available. There are many
choices out there and it's useful to know the basic shapes if you're not
already skirt-conversant. The following are fairly standard skirt types
from which other variations can be found:[1]
For patternmaking, spreading, cutting, drapery & general work.
- Schoolgirl skirt – a very short skirt style, often with pleats, can be used for sports
- Mini and micro-mini – short skirts
- Bubble skirt – bulges at the hem like a bubble
- Pencil skirt – slimline, very slinky
- Flip skirt – fitted from waist but then flares around the hemline
- Sarong – a wraparound skirt
- A-line – shaped pretty much like the letter A, can be any length
- Handkerchief – tends to hang in graduated hem lengths, with a diagonal hem cut
- Fishtail – slim waist, billows around hips, narrow around the knees, flares at the heels, like a mermaid's tail
- Peasant – billowing, wide, layered style skirt, usually three quarter length.
-
Select a skirt according to your figure type. The following guide is general and there may be some variations depending on the specifics of your own body shape:
- Short figure: The best skirts for short figures are tapered straight (slim) skirts and A-line skirts but avoid stiff A-lines as they can make you appear squat. Length should be around the knee; if it's either too long or too short, the skirt can make you appear even shorter although if you have shapely legs, a shorter skirt can make them seem longer. Suitable styles include button-fronts and wraparound skirts, as long as they are not stiff. And off-center slit can help to elongate the legs. Vertical embellishments or detailing will also help create the feeling of length. Things to avoid include hem detail, mid-calf length skirts, patch pockets, and girly skirts.[2][3]
- Thick waist: If you have a thick waist, wear skirts that draw attention to your legs and away from the waist. Wear long and full skirts or short skirts. Avoid skirts with any embellishments around the middle, as these will draw attention to the waist.[4]
- Curvy figure: Skirts with subtle tapering are ideal, and A-lines and wraparounds are also suitable. Choose skirts with a flat front, side or back zippers, drop-waists or no waistband if you've a thick waist (or keep if you have a waist to show off), flat-textures with little stretch, and soft, fluid fabrics to float over curves. As with the short figure, an off-center slit can help draw attention to the legs and not the curves. Skirts to avoid include box styles, stiff fabrics, pleats, patch pockets, full styles, and any horizontal patterning. Don't wear any skirts that are too tight.[5]
- Larger stomach: Wear lightly tapered pencil skirts and A-line skirts that drape. Avoid waistbands or remove them, avoid anything clinging or tight, bias cuts, pleats, wraps, darts in the front, gathered or bulky styles, and front pockets. Dark colors and flat textures are best. Don't wear sarongs.[6][7]
- Boy-like figure: Skirts suitable for this type of figure include most styles although if you are concerned that your legs are too skinny, wear a long skirt with a slit or buttons on the front to increase the leg appeal. Pleating is good for slim hips and you can wear slanted pockets, patch pockets, gathering, belts, and thick waistbands. A small waist can be given added attention by the use of a wide belt.[8][9]
- Bottom-heavy figure: This figure is flattered by a moderate A-line style or loose, softly draped skirts, and wraps, and the good news is that skirts flatter your figure more than pants. A tapered knee-length skirt can work if it's not too severe, and avoid waistbands. Details should be vertical, and prefer dark colors. Avoid pockets on the skirt, pleating all the way around, bias cuts or trims, Lycra fabric, hem detail, a lot of flare, or horizontal embellishment. Don't wear any skirts that are too tight and avoid any skirts that have pleats above the hips.[10][11]
- Flat bottom: Wear Lycra fabrics, tight skirts, and bias-cut skirts.[12]
- Long waist, short legs: Select straight skirts to give your legs length. The best length for the skirt tends to be between mid-thigh and above the knee. A belt in the same color as the skirt can visually shorten the upper body. Wear short tops or jackets, tone the pantyhose with the skirt, and rely on vertical embellishments to give a sense of length.[13][14]
- Short waist, long legs: Look for skirts which are straight and have a dropped waist. Skirts that hip-hug or are low-rise, no waistband, and low-slung skirts are also a good choice. Tops that fall past the waistline can swallow up some of the leg-length and fluid skirt fabric can hide the short waist. Avoid anything on the skirt that interrupts the line of the top coming over the skirt (for example, pleats), belts that don't blend in, high or wide waistbands, and horizontal detailing near the waist zone of the skirt.[15][16]
- Large thighs: This figure is flattered by skirts that are loose and drape or have soft pleats. Avoid wearing Lycra-blend narrow skirts.[17]
- Thick ankles: If you have thick ankles, skirts are best when long and loose and with above-the-ankle boots. Any skirt with hem detail, embellishment, or flare in the lower half will draw attention to the ankles, so avoid this.[18]
-
Understand the importance of hem length with skirts.
Hem lengths change constantly but it's important to stick with the
length that flatters you most. The best way to find this out is to check
out the skirts in your wardrobe that you feel best in (or try a few
lengths on at the store). Note where the hem falls. InStyle suggests
that this will often be on the leanest part of your legs, which is
usually mid-thigh or just above or below the knee.[19]
Find up to three lengths that flatter you best and aim to keep with
those when shopping for skirts. You can do this with ease provided you
are honest with yourself about those dowdy skirts you've been hanging on
to for too long; we're all born fashion-conscious, sometimes it just
needs reawakening!
- Hems should sit straight when on, with no dipping front or back. If not, try on another skirt.
-
Select a 1950s style full or half circle skirt for most figure types – the full circle skirt is almost one-shape-suits-all.
The 1950s glamour girl look comes from the flowing, flirty shape,
making this skirt perfect for both work or a night out. Not only that
but this skirt works for basically every figure – giving a cola bottle
silhouette to a Twiggy figure,
and coasting over the lovely bumps of the fuller figured lady, this
really is the Little Black Dress of skirts. All you need to worry about
is length and fabric.
- Too long and it's a granny skirt, too short and you get that 1990s look heavily inspired by Empire Records, or the late 1960s. This is all well and good if you've got thighs that like being out and about, but if you're a little more shy, one bend over and the whole world's your audience! Generally the perfect length is just on or over the knee, as the curve of the hem subtly complements your lower leg by 'cutting off' the knee.
- If you're a vintage fan, this is a great skirt to hunt out in vintage stores. You can often get a beautiful 50s cotton skirt, perfect for holidaying, and often in a kooky, unique fabric. But don't forget the power of eveningwear - you should be able to find sheer, layered fabrics, perhaps with glittering details at the hem. And don't forget: for the perfect 50s shape, pull in your waist with a wide belt, and slip a full petticoat underneath the skirt!
-
Choose a pencil skirt carefully if you have curves.
A great little slinky skirt, particularly prevalent in the pin-up
style, this is a great way of looking sexy whilst covering up. Find the
right fit, and these slinky delights will make you look and feel very
sexy indeed. But some words of warning – underwear and fabric. Be sure
to choose smooth underwear underneath and go for a heavier gauge fabric.
This way the fabric coasts over your curves without illustrating them.
- Make sure you buy the right size skirt. You should be able to fit a finger between yourself and the fabric, comfortably.
- If you love your waist, have a look for the nautically inspired high waisted numbers that have been out and about lately.
- Wear a mini skirt with confidence. The mini is great fun, and essential for a 1960s party. But it really comes down to confidence, no matter what size you are. If you're slim, you can go for any shape of mini, and may particularly enjoy the flared, flirty style that's popular on and off. If you're a little curvier, a straight mini in a heavier gauge fabric (denim that isn't too elasticized is a good example, or basically anything lined) may be your best bet.
- Choose an A line skirt if you have an hourglass or Twiggy sort of shape. The A-line is a bit of a 1970s style but really it's a very simple, unfussy shape, which can be perfect for smart casual work wear. Just be careful with it, as occasionally it can give a never-ending widening look.
- Choose the trumpet skirt if you're an hourglass lady, pear shape or a slim lady, as it creates soft curves. The trumpet skirt is usually a floaty in and out, rippled hem skirt (it's the one your aunt always wears to weddings with a suit jacket). In the right fabric, with the right lining, it can really float over your figure, giving the idea of an hourglass (especially when cut on the bias). But if you have a big hip and upper thigh region, it may accentuate this region, and can really draw the eye to the flaw, so avoid in this case.
- Wear the tulip style if you have curves. This skirt style was a big hit in the 80s and now is found in even more stylish fabrics. Depending on the length and quality, this can be a really good way of showing off your figure by exaggerating it – it's a trick of the eye that Escher would have been proud of. These tulips often have a wide band around the base (which just about stops it from being a puffball) so it's not recommended for the slimmer ladies, as it's designed with curves in mind, and if there's a gap there, you won't have that sexy wiggle look at all!
- Pick the puffball (bubble) skirt if you're not too sensitive about thighs, bums and tums. An eighties nightmare for those that had it the first time around, the puffball can really be seen as a fun wardrobe item! If you simply have to wear one for that 1980s party later, bear the length in mind. Often the waist can be very high without the necessary concession in length, and soon all Queen and country knows your secrets! And if you buy one on a whim and end up hating it - why not turn it into a funky handbag by sewing either side of the waist together and attaching a handle to the top?
- Pair the straight skirt with with a simple white t-shirt for a clean day look. The pencil's roomier, more sensible cousin, a straight skirt can look subtly glamorous. Not too easy to translate to the evening but wonderful for a slim lady about town.
- Wear a maxi if you're a straight up and down kind of gal. A stretchy fabric maxi skirt can look super cool, especially with clunky boots and a denim jacket. But if you're a little curvier, look for a denser fabric that doesn't cling (even go up a size, if you can bear it!) or even a staggered, silky gypsy style. Watch out (especially in maxi dresses) for hidden in and out shapes around the hips. And don't get one that's too long because nobody likes to fall over.
- Pair the fishtail and the mullet. They're both stars of the 80s, both beloved by drag acts, and also, both a bit fishy. If you look back at some of the amazing 1950s evening silhouettes, you'll see the occasional fishtail, and depending on how it's carried out, it can look okay. But if it's too tight and you look like a mermaid that's tied at the knees, you'll be uncomfortable, annoyed, and need cutting out at the end of the evening. However, it can balance the width of your hips, in much the same way as flared trousers, drawing the eye elsewhere.
Tips
- If you're confident enough to wear something, nobody's going to care much (except your mother, and if you're in the mass media, well, everyone). So if you find it and love it just wear it regardless! This particularly goes for vintage hunters; sometimes the fabric is just too good to walk away from, even if it does mean you're wearing harem pants to a wedding. But don't forget - snip snip! - you can always make do and mend. There are millions of online tutorials to help you with your customized designs.
How to Make a Skirt
Making your own skirt is easy and fun. All it takes is some fabric, a
few pins and the most basic sewing. This is a simple skirt to make, no
zippers or buttons, and it takes about an hour to complete. There is no
pattern required, and you can choose your own length--long and elegant
or short and sassy.
-
-
Wrap the fabric very loosely
around your waist with the wrong side facing out, and place several pins
to mark the area where it will be sewn together.
-
Remove the fabric from your body, lay it on the floor and finish pinning down the side where the seam will be sewn.
-
Sew a 1/2-inch seam along the side of the skirt where you pinned it. Press the seams with an iron, and turn the skirt right-side out.
-
Turn the fabric in 1/4 inch at one end of the skirt, and press the seam with iron. Turn the same seam under again 1 inch, and sew at the edge. This will be the casing for the drawstring.
-
Find the middle of the waistband, and make a small vertical cut from the inside. The drawstring will go through here. Tie a knot on both ends of the drawstring and feed the drawstring through the skirt.
-
Try on the skirt and tighten the drawstring to be sure it fits properly. Remember, it must fit loosely as there is no zipper.
-
Decide on a length, and hem accordingly. You can also decorate this skirt further by sewing on appliques, adding a yoke or attaching beads and fabric flowers.
-
Wrap the fabric very loosely
around your waist with the wrong side facing out, and place several pins
to mark the area where it will be sewn together.
How to Make a Hot Topic Skirt
If you love the clothes at Hot
Topic but you don't love the prices, this article will show you how to
make a skirt that looks like it belongs on the rack, but costs much
less!
Steps
-
Buy two ruffled skirts and/or petticoats.
Around Halloween they have 'petticoats' at Wal-Mart. You may think that
the waist looks tiny, since they are children's costume items, but it
stretches to be bigger than you'd expect. Buy a black one and another
one in any other color you like.
If you're feeling ambitious, you can make your own skirts, especially once you know How to Gather Fabric into Ruffles. - Buy ribbon in the same color as your non-black petticoat. You can either buy this by the yard, as a roll of ribbon or as a set of two ready-made bows (or as many bows as you would like on your skirt).
- Buy a yard of chain. You won't need more than a yard, unless you plan on making more than one skirt. Make sure you choose a size of chain which will work with your skirt; if the chain is too thin it may snap, but if it's too heavy it will be difficult to attach and may make your skirt too heavy or awkward to wear.
- Arrange the skirts so that the colored petticoat is inside of the black one, but you can still see the color sticking out of the bottom by a couple of inches. Sew the skirts together if you wish, or you can leave them separate.
- Sew or glue the chain onto the skirt between the waistbands of the two skirts (this will stop the chain digging into your side). If you plan on using the skirt for other things, just pin the chain into the side of the skirt once you put it on and adjust it.
- Sew or glue the bows on, about an inch and a half from the top of the skirt. If you bought ribbon, tie it into bows, then sew or glue these on.
- Try some patterned tights underneath it! Nothing too much, but try black and white harlequin or checkerboard.
- Pretty much any ruffled skirts will work.
- If you can, get a black skirt which is shorter than the colored skirt. This will make layering them easier.
