How to Make Your Own Skirt

Steps

  1. Decide whether you want to wear your skirt around your hips or waist. Measure your choice (hips or waist), and triple it. For example, if you want to wear the skirt around your waist, and your waist is 27", your final measurement will be 81".

  3. Figure out how much fabric to buy. To do this, divide your final measurement (81") by the length of a yard (36"). The answer in this case is 2 yds. + 9 in. You will need to purchase 2 1/4 yds. of fabric. Fabric comes in various widths, such as 36", 54", and 60". The width is printed on the end of the bolt. Choose a shorter width for a shorter skirt and a longer width for a longer skirt. To get a rough idea of how long the skirt will be, unroll a short length of fabric from the bolt and hold the top edge (the finished, or 'selvage' edge) to your waist or hips.
  4. Purchase your fabric. Look for a medium weight cotton fabric. Cotton is easy to sew with and presses well. It's perfect for beginners. There are many adorable prints, calicoes, and solids to choose from.
  5. Choose your embellishments (optional).Trims, such as rickrack or lace, are easy to sew around the hem of your skirt. You will need the same length of trim as fabric (2 1/4 yds.) You may buy it by the package or by the yard. By the yard is best, since you can buy the exact amount you need. If you wish, you may also sew an applique to your skirt. For most appliqués, less than 1/4 yd. of fabric is needed. You may purchase fabric for your appliqué or use scraps you have at home.
  6. Buy a package of 1/2" wide elastic.
  7. Prewash your fabric.
  8. Fold your fabric short end to short end ( unfinished end to unfinished end) with right sides together. Pin and sew them together at a 5/8" seam. Press the seam open. This seam will go down the back of the skirt.
  9. Make the elastic waistband casing. Turn down the top edge of your skirt 1", and press. turn the bottom edge of the casing to the inside 1/4", and press. A seam gauge makes it easier to measure accurately. Sew close to the folded edge, leaving a 1" opening at the back seam to insert the elastic through.
  10. Hem the bottom edge. Turn the bottom edge up 1" and press. Turn the top edge of the hem to the crease and press. Stitch close to folded edge.
  11. Add your embellishments. Trim: Pin your trim to the skirt so that it covers your hem. Turn under the ends of the trim at the back seam and lap them. Sew in place.

Appliqué: Attach your appliqué to your skirt wherever you like. Try placing it in the bottom right- or left-hand corner for a funky, stylish look.
  12. Cut a piece of 1/2" wide elastic the same length as your waist or hip measurement, plus 1". Referring to the previous example, your elastic would be 27" + 1"= 28".
  13. Attach a safety pin to the end of your elastic. Thread the elastic through the waistband casing. Overlap the ends of the elastic by 1/2" and sew them together, using a zigzag stitch. Sew the opening in the casing shut, close to the folded edge.
  14. Wear your new handmade skirt proudly!
